How/where to install kitchen cabinets: directly on wood subfloor or on the tile? My kitchen has been gutted. The walls, the electrical, and the wood subfloor has been preped. Should the base cabinets be installed directly onto the wood subfloor (my house has a 3 to 4 foot crawl space...not concrete slab), or should the kitchen floor be tiled first and then install the base cabinets on top of the tile? What is the proper way to do it? Thanks in advance for your answers.

What's the exact height to install kitchen cabinets? We are prepping our kitchen walls for new cabinets that a Lowes installer is installing. I want to make sure that the wall that is showing is sanded and painted but I'm not sure where the back splash will end on the wall and where the wall cabinet will start. I've read that there should be 18" from counter to wall cabinet. Can anyone tell me what the standard counter height is? We will have granite counters w/a back splash. THanks!

How to install kitchen cabinet corner crown molding 140 degree angle? Good Morning, I spent yesterday about 5 hours, trying to figure out the cut, and I can't. I have wasted about 6 feet of crown molding and I just can't. I have put crown molding on the wals, and those are fine because the saw already tells you on the manual. but not for 140 degrees corner cabinets. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance. Thanks Leo. So let me know if I am going the right way. I put the table saw art 20 degrees (90-20=70) because I have to divide the 140 by 2 so that is 70 degrees. Then I lay the crown molding the same way It will be up on the wall, and then I adjust the tilt to 22.5? Now I know why it was so important to pass Geometry in HS. And I passed with a B!!! it is an inside corner by the way.
how should i remove then re-install an swinging kitchen door? it's the kind that will swing into each room and lies against the wall. (think restaurant kitchen) it has a peg at the top and a plate with screws and a horizontal spring at the bottom (and a peg but i can't see it). the house was built in 1920 and we think the door might be original, since it matches the other original doors. we need to remove it to re-do the flooring then re-install it. is it worth it or should we just fudge the floor around the bottom?

Trying to install a kitchen light. Not sure which wire is positve and which is negative? Its a very old fixture over the kitchen sink. The pre existing fixture was an old shop light. When I removed it the wires were not connected. I have 3 old wires... 2 are the same color and the third is red. I tested the wires with one of those little pen probes and the red wire is hot and one of the same colored wires is hot. The new fixtures has a black and white color with the ground. Is the old red wire to match with the new white wire?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Should I install a natural slate tile or a porcelain tile in my new kitchen? My husband and I just bought a house that was in foreclosure. The flooring downstairs has to be totally replaced. We want to install slate tile in the kitchen but hear it is a pain to maintain. We like having a natural stone and not a manufactured run of the mill tile but worry about what is the most sustainable. We plan to have kids in this house, and the kitchen will be a high traffic area. What is the better tile for a kitchen - slate or porcelain?

How do you install a new kitchen sink faucet? My kitchen sink currently has a hot & a cold knob, and a spout...pretty old fashioned. I want to go and get an up to date faucet with a single lever valve and a detachable spout to rinse dishes, etc. but have never installed one before. What do I do?
What type of flooring should I install in my kitchen & bath? I live in a small home (buillt mid -1950's) in the midwest. I want to replace the ceramic tile currently in kitchen/bath with something that is easier to maintain but that will still look nice. (I don't like the ceramic because its a) white, b) any thing made of glass that falls on the floor is guaranteed to break, and c) I absolutely cannot keep the grout clean, no matter what I do!) I would like the flooring I select to go well with the original hardwoods that are found throughout the rest of the home. I also want to select something that will appeal to buyers in a few years when we sell. The homes in our area sell for around $145K so I want to select flooring that is appropriate for this price range. Any ideas? Thanks!

Need help with kitchen sink install? Here's the scenario. I have an offset undermount sink, I'm using 3/8" granite tile for the counter on 1/2" hardibacker, on 5/8" plywood. Obviously I can't bend the tile around the offset in the sink so I'm planning on mounting the sink under the tile on top of the hardibacker, then have the tile cut and bullnosed into the sink cutout. Am I on the right track here or is an offset sink not the way to go.
Which is better to install in the kitchen; granite or quartz? Obviously quartz is cheaper, but I am wondering which material is better. We are pretty clean people, meaning we clean up spills when they happen and leaving stains overnight or on the counter for a long period of time would not be an issue in our home.

NEW plumbing to install a kitchen? I am building a kitchen in what is currently an unfinished basement suite in my house. How important is the actual placement of the sink and dishwasher as they relate to the water supply lines and drains? The kitchen upstairs is on the same wall (west side of the house) but the kitchen downstairs will be about 20 feet to the left of the one upstairs. Is it easy to run the water lines over there? What do I need to keep in mind when planning my cupboards/sink location? Is there a vent somewhere that I need to work around? If I buy the cabinets and appliances and install everything, could any plumber hook up, re-route and create water supply and plumbing/drains to match where I put everything? The walls are already insulated and drywalled, but I can rip it off to deal with lines and drains if need be . The ceiling is finished with rectangular tile things, so access should be no problem that way either. What all do I need to consider before buying cabinets and planning design?
Kitchen Remodel: Install cabinets or hardwood floors first? I am remodeling my kitchen (cabinets countertops and hardwood flooring) and doing the installation myself. The hardwood floors will run from the kitchen into the dining room. There is only a pennensula of cabinets/countertop dividing the two rooms. I am wondering if I should install the hardwood floors first, so that they run under the cabinets first, or install the cabinets and lay they floor around them. It seems to me that there are benefits of both. It may be easier to install the floors first, but may require more material. This would raise the cabinets, which may affect the sink plumbing requiring some new pipes. Installing the canbinets first would result in lower cabinets unless I raised them with extra subflooring. Also, which would be better to keep the stove and dishwasher at the right levels. Can the legs on these appliances be adjusted as necessary? Thanks! I should clarify that the existing floors are linoleum in the kitchen and carpet in the dining room, so I can't follow what was previously done. So, is it recomended to run the hardwood under the stove and dishwasher? Does anyone think I need to add extra subfloor to raise the cabinets if I do them first?
how to properly install kitchen granite counter top? I have L shape cabinet layout, and need to decide how to connect two granite pieces. I have heard two suggestions: 1. shorter cut (one piece for longer portion of L and one piece for shorter portion for L, with straight cut along the line of one of the pieces.) POS: short cut. CONS: colors do not match 2. diagonal cut. POS: better matching colors. CONS: long cut What should I pick? i had two different installers come and give bids (never put all your eggs in same basket). they gave two different opinions and both said they can go either way! :) go figure... i am thinking of slab (see my other question) and diagonal cut.
Install in stock kitchen cabinets...? I want to buy some premade kitchen cabinets from Lowe's & I know I could use one of their sub contractors to install the cabinets...if I wanted to hire someone myself to put them in, where would I begin to look?? I'll take advice on the whole process if you've got it...I'm a young single mom, in her first house...I've never done anything like this before!! Plus, I'm on a tight budget.

What kind of kitchen floor should I install-DIY? When I bought my house the kitchen had ceramic tile, which I thought was great...until the grout started cracking because it's not level. Now I have several tiles I can actually pull up out of the floor. I want to just rip it out and start over (which won't be hard at all...all I have to do is pull at it and more will come up). I need some ideas for some inexpensive solutions that won't involve too much ripping out of subflooring and will be relatively quick to install. I want to keep with the 50's retro feel I have going and that's period to the house, also. I was thinking laminate black and white or the idustrial kind of tile, but I wasn't sure if it would work with the unlevel subfloor. Any ideas on how to either install it without leveling the subfloor, or how to level the subfloor without ripping it all out? Anything would help... Thanks!
