How To Remodel Kitchen Knowledge Base
Want to completely remodel kitchen. How best to start? Where to go first? Is it ok just to ask cabinet company people to just come out and give me estimates? How do I know if I am getting an accurate estimate? How many estimates should I request? How much information do I need to give the estimator? I am concerned about "offending" companies by asking them give me estimates then not following through with the work. We are planning a complete kitchen remodel, floor, cabinets, fixtures appliances. Where should we start to get the best estimate?
My kitchen remodel included "appliance installation" does that include moving the appliances into the house? I hired a kitchen design company to do a total gut and remodel of my kitchen. The contract says that appliance installation is included. The appliance company dropped off the appliances in my garage. My kitchen contractor is claiming that only the "installation" of the appliances is included, not the physical movement of the appliances from outside the house to inside. Is this typical? I feel like I'm getting ripped off because I might have to spend extra money to get a mover.
What happens if permits aren't pulled on kitchen remodel? We want to remodel our kitchen and want to move a low bearing wall 17 inches, apparently we need a struc engineer for that so we are thinking of just not getting a permit. Does anyone know what happens if we get "caught"? A new beam will be put in place to support the new structure and new footing. The house is in Northern CA and is ~45 years old. From the reads of answers it seems there's always the risk of not "following" the rules.
Exploring Options for uising a General Contractor for a kitchen remodel? We are considering a kitchen remodel. We've hired a general contractor and a kitchen designer for the DESIGN PHASE (a seperate agreement will be presented for the BUILD PHASE). We would like to explore other paths in lieu of hiring a GC. We are interested in hearing from homeowners who have done kitchen remodels as to the options they pursued? How many served as their own GC's? How did that go? How many worked with the local home center for cabinets, floors, etc and left the structural stuff to someone else? How did that work? We're not interested in being our own GC, but there has got to be a less expensive way! We're making quality decisions and downgrading OUR choices for OUR kitchen just to pay the GC's fee and overhead costs. For example, we did all the work to select over $10K worth of appliances (which will be delivered and installed) and the GC will stand to earn quite a bit for what appears little work (enough for another appliance). Are there any other options?
Is there a website where I can "virtually" remodel my kitchen? I am looking to remodel my kitchen. I am stuck here alone in the office for the day (with nothing to do but babysit the telephone) and figured that I would work on my kitchen remodel and toss some visual ideas around. Is there a good FREE website that I can play around with my ideas and concepts? One with GOOD visuals and easy to use would be best. I tired Home Depot and Lowes, but none of them let me "view" my kitchen ideas. Anyone have some Websites they can share?
Can i get in trouble for hiring illegal aliens to remodel my kitchen? We are getting our kitchen remodeled and we live in south TX...there are lots of illegal mexicans around. Well we have a friends who knows some mexicans who fix homes, remodel etc... Q: How much trouble can you get in for hiring them? They are cheap labor....better than getting someone from the Home Depot!
has anyone used Sears to remodel their kitchen? I need to remodel my house's kitchen, including new appliances, cabinets, and flooring. I have no idea how to go about finding a reputable kitchen contractor, and I see Sears does remodels. Anyone have experience with them?
How long does it take to remodel a kitchen? My boyfriend and his brother are remodeling his brothers kitchen. They have everything there that they need already and it just needs to be installed. He's been over there all day everyday for the past week installing cabinets and he's trying to tell me that they still aren't finished with it. He also tried telling me that it took them all night (about 7 hours) to install the microwave over the oven. I watch the shows on TLC and HGTV, but that's about as much as I know about remodeling. Does it really take this long to do all of that or is he lying to me trying to make me feel sorry for him for working so hard all day and night?
Remodel my livingroom area into my kitchen to make it bigger? I want to remodeling my kitchen to make it bigger so this means turning my living room area to make my kitchen Then adding on to the back will be my living area. This means people will be walking thru the kitchen to get to the the livingroom. Does this sound good or should i get a interior designer to help out..or even go buy a bigger house? Any suggestions?
How can I 'remodel' my kitchen cabinets with little money and no experience? The cabinets are 20 years old, light/med oak....no knobs, old hardware and what looks almost like contact paper on the sides. Tried to clean one section of one cabinet with a wood cleaner...and it's now much lighter than the rest of the cabinets. The countertop is 80's oak look - but I can live with that. My kitchen is painted white. My only remodelling experience is painting. Thanks, in advance, for advice.
Remodel kitchen and dining room? I'm designing an all open kitchen and dining area. I live near the beach and want the motif to be beach cottage or perhaps a little shabby sheikish. No, I'm not gay :-) Does anybody have any ideas or cool links with photos?
Which one would add more value to a house? A kitchen remodel or an addition? So me and my mom have been arguing about this lol. She wants to add more equity to the house so she thinks that adding an addition would do it but I think remodeling and upgrading the kitchen would result in a larger return? So am I right? I know real estate differs from state to state and even neighborhood to neighborhood but it seems that kitchens always sell houses?
Moving into a resale house and want to remodel kitchen? I will have maple cabinets and floors to start with, the rest needs to be gutted. I was thinking stainless appliances but really want to do an antique rubbed bronze with the light fixtures and cabinet hardware. What kind of sink/faucet and color granite would compliment? Thank you!
How much does it cost to remodel my small kitchen? I live in Portland, Oregon & my house was buit in the 50s so my kitchen is pretty small. I'd like to remodel it so I can save some space and make it look more modern. I want to put in new cabinets & new countertops. I'm not too picky about getting brand names stuff. Does anyone know on average how much the whole thing would cost, part & labor? Would it be better if I hire an interior designer or just a carpenter? Or would it be cheaper to just go to like Home Depot, Costco..etc and get them to do it? Any tips on how I could save the most money would be great. I'm clueless when it comes to decorating. Thanks in advance.
220 Volt Wiring Guidance for Kitchen Remodel? We are remodeling our kitchen. Currently there is a 220 line running to the electric range. We are replacing the range with a built in cook-top and installing a double wall oven on the opposite wall. There is also a wall that has been removed. This presents several questions. 1. The 220 line that will be going to the cook-top needs to be re-routed because the wall it was going through no longer exists. Do we have to replace this line all the way back to the breaker panel, or can we splice the line with wire connectors inside a box to get the extra line need because of the re-routing? 2. Do we need to run a completely separate line from the breaker panel to the new double oven or can we tie into the existing 220 line at some point? 3. For any wiring that needs to be replaced/re-run, what is the best type/size to get for this application? Thank you! This work will not be inspected, but I would like for it to be done properly. The cook-top needs 30 AMPS and the double oven requires 50 AMPS. We are currently planning on running the existing wire that goes from the breaker box to the range/oven to the new double oven and we will be installing a box so that we can splice a line to the oven for the remainder of the distance needed. We are running a new 10/3 wire from the breaker box all the way to the new cook-top for the 30 AMP service. I hope this provides some much needed information in order to give a complete answer! Thank you! One more thing I may need to figure out. How do I find out if my home has 240V or 208V?
Cost of kitchen remodel? I am planning on remodeling my kitchen, den and dining room and turning it into a great room. The job requires tearing down two walls that are 7'each and installing a support beam which is about 17'. I have a two story house so the job requires temporary support beams. I am also installing about 16k worth of cabinets in an L style kitchen approximately 24' x 14'. There will also be an island. The contractor wants to charge me 37k for just the labor which also includes installing lighting. The flooring is not included. He says it's a two month job which includes himself and a crew of three. Is that not excessive? I live in So. Cal. Thank you in advance.
What is the most inexpensive way to go about a kitchen remodel? Eventually I want to redo the kitchen in my house, but I want to keep the cost under $10k, maybe even $5k. The kitchen is not very large either. We want new cabinets, counter top, and new appliances: range, over the range microwave (there currently is not one, and the exhaust fan is not directly above the range), install a dishwasher as well as a garbage disposal (there is no dishwasher or disposal now). What are some ways to keep the costs $5 - $10K? We could install the appliances ourselves, but I would prefer someone be paid to install the cabinets, counter and moving the exhast fan over so that we can have an OTR microwave. Thanks for the laugh Bob, I wish, lol.
Where can I get ideas for a 1950's retro kitchen remodel? We just bought a 1951 ranch house and the kitchen needs upgrading, but I want to keep the original 1950's theme. I'm looking for websites, magazines or books with ideas on cabinets, countertops, flooring, appliances, furniture, window treatments and accessories from this era.
Where to start on kitchen remodel - walls, floor or cabinets? I'm planning to completely redo my kitchen and I'm not sure where I should start. I want to tear out some paneling and put up drywall, rip up linoleum and lay either a ceramic or vinyl tile floor and install all new cabinetry. Is there any particular order I should perform these projects? I figure the cabinets come last, but I wasn't really sure as I expect to change the layout of the cabinets and add a breakfast bar or island. So should I do that and then the floors around it?
I want to remodel my kitchen on a budget...? ...because we just bought a house and don't have any money for any kind of remodeling. I love all white kitchens and want to get new cabinets put in. Has anyone worked in phases to get their kitchen done? I mean, I could get the wall cabinets done, then wait for the base cabinets and countertops. The third phase could be flooring and lighting. And the last would be appliances --if at all. This could take 5-10 years. Of course, I wouldn't have matching cabinets but that doesn't bother me because I don't like everything to match anyway. It would, of course, be a pain because of contractors working the house. Other than that, do you see any disadvantages? Can it be done? Anyone done something similar?
Kitchen remodel -- black granite floor and black granite countertop? I have a small kitchen that I want to remodel. I like the look of the black granite floor tiles and I also like the black granite counter tops. If I were to do both in the black granite, would this look bad? I have never seen it done so I thought maybe it was a design faux pas.
How much to remodel a kitchen? A house I'm considering buying has a way too small kitchen. It has a nice size eat in area just behind the "half wall." I would want to remove the half of a wall (which has the sink & dw on it so I know that involves moving plumbing) and take out the eat in area and just have one nice size kitchen. I don't want top end appliances, counters, or cabinets. I live in So. California too.
How much roughly would it cost to remodel a kitchen and bathroom with these dimensions? Kitchen is about 10X15, has one wall of cabinets that might just need refacing about 10 feet long with sink, needs new countertop, and linoleum. The bathroom needs the cabinet and countertop replaced about 6 feet long, new toilet, shower, and linoleum. Just seeing if someone has a rough estimate on how much it would cost if anyone has the time. Looking for middle of the line products that are basic, but not plain. I would be doing it all myself
Where to start in kitchen remodel? Planning to redo entire kitchen. Replace all drywall, cabinets and because the floor sqeaks probably the subfloor. What is the order and details that would be helpful for this DIYer? Thanks
How much to remodel small kitchen? I have just moved into a house with a very small, old kitchen. The whole thing needs ripping out and rebuilt. Can anybody give me an idea how much a new kitchen would cost (ballpark) - to include maybe 10 cabinets, oven, dishwasher, fridge, sink , lighting and countertops. I will need this all installed as well. Thanks!
Will it pay me to remodel the kitchen of my mfg home before I sell? The rest of the place is nice, and has knotty pine wainscoating, exceptionally nice hot tub room added on, beautiful yard, nice lot. If I spend 5-10 thousand dollars remodeling the cabinets, appliances and floors, what percentage of this investment could I expect ot get back on the sale of the place?
Copper sink a good choice for new kitchen remodel? We are remodeling our ranch style home and not sure if putting a farm style copper sink is a good choice with stainless appliances or a good choice at all regardless? It would be a patina copper having kind of that old black brushed over copper look to it, NOT bright polished copper. Do these sinks require lots of maintenance, do they stain easy? I really don't want to have a standard ivory / white sink. Any thoughts or recommendations would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
I just bought a new home - love the floor plan but not the kitchen. Need to remodel...any ideas? Hi, I just bought a new home - love the floor plan but not the kitchen. The previous owners have put granite floors, stone tiles for countertop, maple cabinets and white appliances. The ganite is black with brown spots like pattern - it is similar to the photos posted in the previous discussion named "Kitchens I have designed". The countertop is light brown with brown grout and the maple cabinets are the light colored kind. If you can imagine it - nothing goes together in the kitchen. I am not sure if I want to change the granite floors as that extends to the family room (open plan). Currently the walls are beige and I am planning on changing that to brown (not very dark but dark). What else should I change in the kitchen to make it look look beautiful? I am looking around in the forum and see very talented and creative people here - so, I am hoping to get some opinions about this. Please do let me know. I really appreciate it! Thank you!
How do I remove VERY old kitchen cabinets? My house is about 75 years old. I want to remodel my kitchen and I need help undertanding how to remove my old kitchen wall cabinets. They seem to not be screwed to the wall. I can tell the back wall of the shelves is the actual kitchen wall and not part of the cabinet. Do you think there is any harm in just getting a hammer and tearing it down without knowing anything else?
When remodeling kitchen, how much can an addition cost? We have a standard 9X10 L-shaped kitchen. It's not small but it's not conducive to entertaining as most of our parties end up being kitchen parties. We cannot tear down any interior walls because of the design of the house and other connecting rooms. I was thinking of enlarging the square footage by adding outwards. I understand additions cost a lot, but what is the ballpark figure? I am looking to extend only one wall towards the backyard. It has 4 windows. Vinyl siding. I'm in the Southeast.
How can we remodel our kitchen cabinets? Our cabinets are cheap probably 3/4 in painted mdf doors. they are just flat rectangle doors. They have no character. They are painted with any oil based white paint. Is there anything we can do to give them some character without totally replacing them?
How does refacing kitchen cabinets work? Does it come out nicely? I'm looking to buy a house and some of the houses have old looking kitchens. I can't afford to totally remodel the kitchen, but refacing is a possibility. What kind of results would I get with this, and about how much does it cost for an average size kitchen?

I wanted to remodel my kitchen within 10k budget including appliances? I mainly wanted to replace the counter and bar now made with white tiles (the sink is now facing the counter bar and breakfast nook); replace the backsplash which is now just painted white with stainless steel or decorated tiles; level down the bar to the sink level and make the widened counter as the new eatery; get rid of my breakfast nook table, and refinish or paint cabinets. The total length of my kitchen from the back of the refrigerator to the wall where the breakfast nook window is 18.25 feet. Had anyone done something similar to this in a very tight budget? Could you please provide pointers? Thank you.
kitchen remodel - pass through to living room? we are about to remodel our kitchen and contemplating cutting out a small section of the wall so we can have a pass through bewteen the kitchen & living room (so we can see from the kitchen to living room - actually all the way to the back yard - and let more sunlight into living room). The wall we want to cut through is a supporting wall. What is necessary (in Florida) to put a small pass thru in a supporting wall? I've been told that it's doable to cut a small hole in a supporting wall - there are just extra steps to take?? I appreciate any advice you can give (other than go to home depot/lowes). thanks!
kitchen remodel? How much would it cost for a kitchen remodel-Please exclude appliances. Reface cabinets, redo floor, fresh paint, possible countertops
Kitchen Remodel? I will be replacing kitchen appliances as part of a remodel shortly and hate the idea of scraping my "gently" used (ok, 3yr old) range/microhood/dishwasher. Any idea of the best way to get some cash out of them. It doesn't seem practical to sell these items on eBay. I also do not want to replace my frig but want a good way to change the color on the doors. New doors from Sears (it's a Kenmore) are a FORTUNE. Any ideas on cheaper option to get stainless look on the doors? I live in the east bay (N. California).
Kitchen Remodel? What is the average price for a kitchen remodel? I know it depends on many things, but I'm just looking for the average price.
I need help w/ a small galley kitchen remodel.? I have a small galley kitchen I'm trying to remodel for under $5,000 to put my house up for rent. I have everything worked out the way I want except for my breakfast nook off the the side of it that has my washer in it. I want to put a stackable w/d combo there but I have a window there. Would it be a problem to put a stackable combo there in front of the window? I don't want to brick over it (too much money)
Kitchen Remodel: Install cabinets or hardwood floors first? I am remodeling my kitchen (cabinets countertops and hardwood flooring) and doing the installation myself. The hardwood floors will run from the kitchen into the dining room. There is only a pennensula of cabinets/countertop dividing the two rooms. I am wondering if I should install the hardwood floors first, so that they run under the cabinets first, or install the cabinets and lay they floor around them. It seems to me that there are benefits of both. It may be easier to install the floors first, but may require more material. This would raise the cabinets, which may affect the sink plumbing requiring some new pipes. Installing the canbinets first would result in lower cabinets unless I raised them with extra subflooring. Also, which would be better to keep the stove and dishwasher at the right levels. Can the legs on these appliances be adjusted as necessary? Thanks! I should clarify that the existing floors are linoleum in the kitchen and carpet in the dining room, so I can't follow what was previously done. So, is it recomended to run the hardwood under the stove and dishwasher? Does anyone think I need to add extra subfloor to raise the cabinets if I do them first?
Rewiring/remodel kitchen - oven? During a remodeling project we are moving the oven about 10 feet from where the outlet is. The oven outlet (gas oven/stove) is a three pronged type where each slot is 120 degrees off from the other two (looks like a bisected Mercedes-Benz star thing). Anyway - we would like to either: 1. rewire the outlet junction box and run a conduit outside of the wall over 10 feet to where we want the oven (outside the wall because of a dumb mistake with the walls - but it won't matter much anyway because it'll be behind cabinets. or 2. just rewire the oven so that it has about a 15 foot cord. option 2 sounds like the less "sane" of the two options considering the length we would require any input? I figure I should be able to rewire the outlet, same gauge/type wiring, run the conduit over, install a new plug, assuring the conduit attached snugly to wall etc. and voila~! any advice?
Kitchen Remodel.? Which is the better deal...quality and moneywise.....getting your kitchen cabnits from a place like Lowe's and Homedepot or having a custom cabnit maker make them. I would love to hear some true life examples.
Kitchen Remodel? I have an 1880's house that was redone in the 1960's. We are just completeing the bathrooms, have already done the dining room, living room, bedrooms, and are finally down to the kitchen. We live near the water, so want something casual but fitting in the theme of the house. (Victorian Cottage) Any and all ideas are welcome. Floors? Countertops? Colors?Cabinets, new or paint? We dont have an unlimited budget, so need to save where we can, but I want one "wow factor item" that I will splurge on.
Kitchen remodel: Freestanding or Slide-in range? My husband and I just bought a house and we are redoing the kitchen. We are trying to pick our appliances, but I don't really understand what the difference is between a freestanding range and a slide in. We are getting all new floors, cabinets, counters, and appliances, so the size is not an issue because we can just plan for that as we pick our cabinets and countertops. The installation and wiring I think are the issues we need to worry about. At the moment I'm not sure how the old range is wired. Does it matter which I get?
Kitchen Remodel? Where can I test out different colors and textures for my floor, walls, and ceiling in my new kitchen; like, see what each design, etc. will look like with my new cabinets, etc.
Kitchen Remodel payment? I recently had my kitchen redone, everything is paid for in full. Apparently the cabinet person that my contractor used has a beef with him about payments from my and other projects. The cabinet guy is threating to put a lien on my house due to this non payment from my contractor, my question is can he do this? And if so what can i do about it?
price for kitchen remodel? My kitchen flooded 5 mnths ago and I'm having a problem finding a contractor that I can afford and won't jerk me around. I'm just curious as too how much I should expect to pay for a contractor to put in new cabinets and countertops, alittle plumbing work, and laying down a new floor?
Accouting queston during kitchen remodel? From an accounting perspective, could Lowes be taking a loss yet still charging me for damaged products? Is that legal? Ethical? Please explain in an accounting example. Lowes is managing a kitchen job for me; the carpenters and granite countertop people have not been to good, so some installed pieces have been replaced. Lowes gave me those pieces instead of throwing away at the time. Now, since the job has taken 8.5 months (still not finished) I asked for a compensation on the project. They swiftly pointed to these pieces as just compensation. I feel: • This was never discussed as prior as compensation; just said they would let me have it if I wanted it; instead of them having to haul it off. • These pieces are not worth full value; there damaged…most likely written off as such. Meaning, I was told the cabinets would be destroyed or resold for about $100. The granite countertops were already glued down and then ripped out; lessening their original tensile strength.
Laminate Floor and Cabinets in Kitchen Remodel - Which first? I'm redoing my kitchen with new cabinets and new flooring. The problem is that I have conflicting information on what should come first, lay the laminate floors down and then the cabinets.. or put the new cabinets down and then the flooring. The idea is with putting the floor down first, it will look clean under the cabinets. But I've been told if you put the flooring down first, the floor won't float and then you'll have creaking. Any thoughts? Please only people who work in that industry, no guessing with opinions...
